Lumina Suspension Reviews
On July 12, 2017, I purchased two Gabriel strut assemblies for my 1996 Chevrolet Lumina Sedan from Auto Accessories Garage. The product numbers are G56952 and G56953. After shipment received, I had them installed on July 24, 2017. While driving home from installation I heard and felt a clunk from both left and right rear sides even over very minor uneven road surface. The clunks became more pronounced. On August 14, 2017, I took the car back. They put the car on the lift and checked all rear suspension mounts, connections and bushings. What they discovered was both of the new Gabriel G56952 and G56953 rear strut assemblies had very weak coil springs that were bouncing and clunking together with even a small 1 inch to 2 inch bounce of the rear body. They found the bottom number 2 and number 3 coils on both strut spring assemblies were bouncing and clunking together. Coil springs are supposed to keep the car from going down and the struts restrict the car from going up which in theory gives a smooth ride. When the bottom 4 coils of the spring are already resting on each other how is it supposed to cushion the ride. Those four coils are nothing more than a part of the mounting fixture. My mechanic said these are the weakest coil springs he has seen in his 30 yrs. and definitely not the correct specifications for this vehicle. These struts are not safe to drive on. Auto Accessories Garage refunded my money without question. Thanks to AAG, but I would stay away from Gabriel. Read more Gabriel ReadyMount Strut customer reviews.
July, 2017. As far as I know Gabriel is the only manufacturer making ready mount rear struts for my 1996 Lumina sedan. All the other parts stores wanted to make it up piece by piece. Autozone wanted $249 apiece, and would not budge, for the same Gabriel quick struts that everyone else wanted $124 - 164. Penny at AAG searched for a real company to price match for me (not ebay) and I ended up paying about $130 apiece with free shipping. Her supervisor even found a way to knock of another $2. The struts were shipped from OK the next day. Penny was fun and easy to talk to, sincerely wanting to help me save money. It's too soon to comment on the quality of the struts but my mechanic said they look well built. Back in the day when building hot rods Gabriel was the go to shocks. Penny said they were the first to build shocks for horse buggies. :) My experience with AAG was A1.
