Silverado Pickup Truck Toolbox Reviews
This is a perfect compliment to the BakFlip MX4. I's just enough out of the way and holds more than it looks like it should. I stood up in it and it had plenty of strength. I got all of my tie downs, chains, and jumper cables out from under my back seat that kept sliding around my back floorboard. Still have room for more stuff. I used LokTite on all the screws so I am sure it will be secure for years to come. Read more BAK BakBox customer reviews.
If I had seen one of these before buying it, I would not have done so. In fact, if I hadn't gone through the trouble of installing this, and to avoid the hassle of shipping it back, I would likely return it. The 3 folding panels that make up this "box" sit in 2 lightweight end pieces that hang on the rails for the bed cover. The panels do not reach all the way to the end of the hangers and the bed rails and end pieces are of such lightweight material that nothing of consequence could really be stored in this. I would have been much better off buying a $20 lockable plastic packing type box and just throwing that in the back of the truck.
One of the large end plates was damaged when I opened the packaging. There was no damage noted on the outside of the cardboard box. BAK Industries is replacing the large end plate.
As instructed installed after the top was installed. Frankly the design and install was initially confusing so would recommend viewing a video first. I didn't, so this took me a little longer to install than the top. However, once I understood the concept it went in just fine. With a few adjustments (no modifications) it fits snug and secure. Really appreciate the extra storage space, no more tool box sliding around the bed. If you wanted end to end space in your bed this may not be the accessory for you, it does fold back but will still will eat up about 8" of bed space. '19 Silverado HD 6'6" bed. Final note it does on interfere with my fifth wheel slider hitch and contents still covered by the first fold in the cover.
In concept the BakBox is a cool idea - a small tool box integrated with the BakFlip bed rails that can be folded up when not in use. But in my opinion this is an early generation product in need of some refinements. I had issues with a couple of things when installing the BakBox on my 2015 Silverado: 1) The BakBox panels were not long enough to reach the four bolt holes on each of the brackets as described in the instructions. The panels were 58" long and needed to be 61". Maybe 58" fits other truck beds but not the Silverado. 2) Each bracket for the BakBox attached to the bed rail using a single clamp leaving some wobble when assembled. There was room for two clamps per bracket and that would have been a sturdier attachment to the bed rails. 3) The BakBox was held open by a velcro strap. Velcro?? And the way the hook strap met the loop strap there was only about 1" of the strap that could be velcroed together. I am sure that an alternative means other than velcro would be better. My recommendation is to wait for the BakBox version 2.
This is a decent storage box. Installs easily, and material is of good quality. It's just OK as a storage box for size and usability. Its' a little pricey for what it is. I haven't been able to use it for any real storage, like tools or other things I haul around. It just stops small things from sliding around in the bed. I do like the ability to place it any where along the rail, but it won't fit all the way to the front or the back.
